The first Christmas celebrated in an independent South Sudan saw thousands of worshippers flocking churches on Sunday. In the Rebuilding Ministries International Church – a branch of the Anglican Church -, people turned up with their families.

CRN News spoke to some of the worshippers.

Manasse Mathiang said he felt so much joy that his country achieved independence and he was able to celebrate the birth of Christ in a new nation.

Josephine Ayuen said she was glad to celebrate Christmas in South Sudan other than in some foreign country.

Abraham Deng said this was his first Christmas in South Sudan in the last 30 years.

He added that the true meaning of Christmas comes into reality because South Sudan is a Christian dominated country.

Gasm Dut said the Bible mentions the name of Kush and that the people of Kush will pass on the message of the birth of Christ even to Islam dominated nations like Sudan.
