The Education Secretary in the Nuba Mountains has assured the community that secondary schools will reopen even if they have to transfer the students to a refugee camp in South Sudan.

Simon Kahlo told a local radio station that the education authorities plan to transfer its six secondary schools to secure areas not targeted by the Sudanese air force in order to open them.

Mr. Kahlo said if the situation remains insecure in Nuba Mountains, the education authorities will transfer secondary school students to Yida refugee camp, in Unity State of South Sudan, in order to allow them to continue their studies.

He added that the authorities count on the assistance of the United Nations and other agencies operating in Yida to set up the schools.

Mr. Kahlo explained that it would be easier to get teachers from East Africa if the Nuba Mountains secondary schools operated in Yida refugee camp.

The Education Secretary in the Nuba Mountains urged the community to remain patient and cooperative.

He added that his office will do whatever it can to reopen and run secondary education for Nuba Mountains’ students.

Secondary schools were closed in earlier June when fighting broke out in Southern Kordofan state between Government troops and SPLA-North forces.
