The business of sex is booming in Juba, especially in Jebel Market sex camp, and prostitutes risk violence and aids from their clients.

The alert comes from Plusnews, an analysis service on aids that is part of the UNOCHA, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Many of the women in the sex camps came from neighbouring countries, drawn to Juba to make quick money without realizing the dangers they face.

A 30-year-old said clients tell her they want her, then they take her to a room and when she asks them to use a condom they pull out a knife or hold her at gunpoint.

She added that clients beat and slap prostitutes who want them to use condoms.

Local organizations say that informal street prostitution with South Sudanese underage girls is also growing and many end up pregnant or infected with sexually transmitted diseases.

The numbers of sex workers in Juba could vary from 3,500 to as many as 10,000, but NGOs working in the sector agree that the numbers are rising.
