Stray dogs have become a menace and a major public health concern for the people of Rumbek, the capital of Lakes State.

Makur Ater Akony, a senior public health officer in Lakes State, told Good News Radio that this year alone at least 45 people died of infections from dog bites.

He urged the members of the public to keep their dogs and donkeys tied at home because the authorities are going to kill all stray animals roaming in and around Rumbek.

Mr Ater said the public health department has already got the poison that kills a dog in five minutes.

He added that the public health office is waiting for the Police to implement a shoot at sight order on stray dogs issued in October.

The shoot at sight order on stray dogs in Rumbek’s market was approved by the Lakes State Legislative Assembly and is yet to be implemented.
