The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning is meeting today with the finance ministers of all ten states of South Sudan in Juba to review an agreement to simplify and regularize revenue collection across South Sudan to bring prices down.

The agreement aims at eliminating the current system of multiple roadblocks, checkpoints and fee collection along the roads and transport corridors of South Sudan, the ministry said in a press release.

Minister Kosti Manibe Nga said many checkpoints and roadblocks are unofficial and the money does not go into the government account.

He added that with the end of unofficial collections, it will be easier and less expensive to do business in South Sudan.

The illumination of unauthorized checkpoints should bring market prices down.

A taskforce that checked on checkpoints and roadblocks in South Sudan found over 60 unauthorized institutions collecting taxes across the country.
