A Government official in Lakes State has cited the culture of dependency among South Sudanese as one major reason behind corruption, arguing that the system of supporting relatives perpetuates corruption.

Athian Majak Malou is the Director General in the Ministry of Rural Development in Lakes State. He told Good News Radio that families have great financial expectations from their relatives working in government posts or other formal employment sectors.

He said the later situation exerts unbearable pressure on individuals who may resort to illegal ways of getting money to reach out to members of their clan or tribe.

He also blamed contractors and other business entrepreneurs for promoting corruption through kickbacks and what he called inducements.

Mr. Athian decried impunity, advocating for a system that will see those involved in corruption punished as a means to deter the practice.

He further advocated rewarding for transparent and accountable persons, encouraging systems that will see regular monitoring and evaluation of Government ministries and departments.

At the same time Mr. Athian called for the inclusion of values that guard against corruption in the school curriculum.

Mr. Athian’s comments come at a time when allegations of corruption among some Government and public officials have been increasingly voiced by concerned citizens.
