DISARMAMENT TO INTENSIFY AFTER RAINS ARE OVER

The disarmament process of civilians with illegal weapons will intensify during the dry season involving the rest of the country.

Army spokesperson Colonel Phillip Aguer Panyiang said the disarmament process will intensify with the arrival of the dry season in Upper Nile, Jonglei, Eastern Equatoria, Western Equatoria, and parts of Central Equatoria.

He said disarmament is the only solution for internal insecurity adding that the spread of small arms is very high in South Sudan.

Col. Aguer added that civilians are already surrendering their weapons freely and peacefully in Warrap, Lakes and Unity states.

He explained that more than 10,000 arms were collected in Lakes and 6,000 in Warrap, half of it in Tonj North County alone.

Col. Aguer said more than 1000 rifles were collected in Panyijar Mayandit, Unity state.

He added that civilians in Mayom County were on the process of surrendering their own guns before last Saturday’s attack.
