The high rate of illiteracy among South Sudan Police officers makes their training on human rights difficult.

Hilde Johnson, who heads the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), said on Wednesday about 80 percent of police force is illiterate making it hard to educate them on human rights standards and respect for individual rights.

Ms Johnson added that the UN police and other donors hope to increase South Sudan Police standard services by introducing community policingl to build their capacity.

She said the UN Security Council has committed 900 UN police to the mission to support and assist the new nation’s police force.

Ms Johnson added that the UN is holding a dialogue with the Ministry of Interior, South Sudan Police Service leadership and the UN police commissioner on the transformation processes.
