1.3 million South Sudanese are threatened by hunger due to food shortages throughout the country.

Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin told journalists last week that a report from the minister for agriculture revealed that a severe hunger is likely to continue and food prices will escalate further in South Sudan.

He said the government will work out strategies through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to bring down prices in the market.

Dr Marial added that conflicts and insecurity in Warrap and Jonglei states contributed to the hunger threat because they disrupted the cultivation season.

The minister said the government will devise a direct market intervention policy to remove taxes on food items to bring high prices down and support traders to facilitate flow of commodities from neighbouring countries.
