The prosecution of government officials involved in stealing public money is key for South Sudan to succeed in building a strong and stable country.
UNMISS chief Hilde Johnson told journalists today that the way South Sudan manages its political processes with transparency and accountability is crucial for its international standing.She said the steps taken by President Salva Kiir to increase transparency and accountability in his speech to UN general assembly were well received by international partners.
Ms. Johnson added that investigating and prosecuting individuals involved in pocketing money meant for development of South Sudan is a precondition for the country’s success.
Ms. Johnson added that the five-point action plan President Kiir presented will end impunity of government officials involved in transferring money into private accounts abroad and putting the people and the country first.
