The Government of Eastern Equatoria is conducting an assessment to determine the level of damage caused by last Friday’s rain storm and flooding in Torit.
Eastern Equatoria State Director for South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission Francis Mottong Otiri told Emmanuel Radio yesterday that the government wants to collect the right data on the disaster before starting to help the flood victims.Mr. Motong urged poeple not to settle along the banks of Ilangi River and to plant trees to reduce storms and the risk of floods.
Preliminary reports indicate that half of the population in Inkas was affected by the flood.
The northern part of Torit Airfield, Ilongute, Imatar and places along Ilangi River also were severely affected.
The assessment is carried by a combined taskforce of government and NGOs engaged in providing emergency services in Eastern Equatoria.
Last Friday’s rainstorm and subsequent flooding displaced over 800 families, and destroyed crops and buildings in Torit.
