The process of preparing the University Act to govern higher education institutions in South Sudan is underway.

South Sudan Deputy Minister for Higher Education Gabriel Kuch Abyei told the local press in Rumbek on Thursday that the draft law to regulate universities and colleges is being circulated among experts to be presented to the Council of Ministers.

He said the University Act will help to resolve the current challenges universities and institutions of higher education face in South Sudan.

The Vice Chancellor of Rumbek University Michael Maker Mangony said that the institution lacks lecture halls, dormitories and dining halls to receive over 600 students who enrolled in the first year.

He added that most first-year students are returnees from East Africa.

Prof. Maker said the University opened in August only for second-year students.

Deputy Minister Kuch, a native of Lakes State who ran for the position of Governor on ANC ticket during the general election, was in Rumbek to oversee preparations towards the reopening of the Rumbek University.
