Media houses and civil society groups in South Sudan need to raise awareness about the African Democracy Charter for the new AU member to ratify the document.
The Executive Director of AMDISS, the Agency for Media Development in South Sudan, Hakim Dario Mio held today a press briefing to update the media and civil society groups about the recent regional consultative conference held in Nairobi about the African Democracy Charter.He said it was important for all civil society groups in South Sudan to work together, raise public awareness and engage political leaders about the Charter for the government to endorse and include it in the Constitution.
Dr. Hakim explained that the conference that took place in Nairobi aimed at raising awareness on the African Democracy Charter, an African Union instrument to promote democracy, good governance and access to information.
He added that the Charter is going through the process of consultations and endorsement by a number of AU member states.
Dr. Akim said the Charter opens the way to an Access to Information law which will be tabled to AU Convention in 2012.
