Authorities in Tonj South County, Warrap State, welcomed the disarmament of civilians in the area since the collection of unauthorized guns will improve security and peace among the communities.
Tonj South County Commissioner Akech Tong told Don Bosco FM that 1,500 SPLA soldiers were deployed to the county to take unauthorized guns from civilians. He praised the President of the Republic for having implemented the nationwide disarmament exercise.
Mr. Tong travelled to all the payams in the county to meet executive chiefs and community leaders explaining to them the procedures of disarmament.
He urged residents not to hide guns or run away with them.
Mr. Tong said the county authorities will investigate any reported disorder caused by soldiers to civilians during the disarmament campaign.
He said the disarmament will be peaceful because most of the civilians are willing to handle their illegal guns.
