The minister for Higher Education sent a memorandum to the council of ministers asking for the withdrawal of licenses from what he called fake private universities in South Sudan.

Peter Adwok Nyaba told journalists yesterday that these universities got registered by the ministry of Legal Affairs through a letter of no objection obtained at the Higher Education ministry.

He said 34 private universities are going be deregistered.

Dr. Nyaba admitted that the government made a mistake by allowing those universities to get licenses with letters of no objection which do not mean approval.

He said the private universities did not follow the process that requires them to prove their physical presence in terms of lecture halls, libraries, laboratories and lecturers and they must be closed down.

The minister added that the private universities will be allowed to operate after meeting all the needs to implement their academic programs.
