The President of the Republic announced today a programme for the first 100 days of the new government he said he will complete this week.
Salva Kiir Mayardit made the declaration while addressing the first joint sitting of the national legislature this morning at the Nyakuron Cultural Centre in Juba.The president said in his speech that education will be priority number one of the first government of the Republic of South Sudan.
Mr. Kiir promised to build 30 new primary schools and four secondary schools during the first 100 days of the new government.
He also announced plans to launch a Teachers Training Development Programme to prepare 7,000 teachers within five years.
On the field of health, the government will make sure that 600,000 children are vaccinated against deadly diseases in Unity, Bahr el Ghazal, Warrap and Upper Nile states and it will distribute mosquito nets to combat malaria.
Mr. Kiir said 30 community midwives are finalizing their training.
He added that he intends to build 100 small health care centres during the first year of governance.
In the next 100 days, the government committed itself to open two roads and two airstrips in Unity and Warrap states, repair the old Juba Bridge and build a new crossing with the help of the Government of Japan, and rehabilitate three roads in Eastern Equatoria and one in Warrap.
To enforce the role of law, the government plans to build 50 police stations and two prisons across the country.
Mr. Kiir announced also a new programme for Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration to streamline the South Sudan Armed Forces.
The president said that development is critical for South Sudan and the country should feed itself instead of looking for hand outs.
He added that it does not come only from oil revenue or from donors but through hard work and discipline.
Mr. Kiir urged legislators to pass five essential laws during the next 100 days Ð the Public Financial Management and Accountability Act, Procurement Act, Internal Audit Act, Petroleum Act and Oil Revenue Management Law Ð to combat corruption.
He urged MPs to take their role seriously by being present at the sessions and on time.
