A UN national staff based in Kadugli said the situation in South Kordofan is still terrible with increasing arrests of South Sudanese and Nuba people.

Emmanuel Timothy said over a phone line from Kadugli that six UN national staff were arrested in the presence of the UN secretary General’s deputy special representative yesterday while boarding a plane to Wau where UNMIS is redeploying part of its staff.

Mr. Timothy added that South Sudanese and Nuba people were being arrested in Kadugli accused of supporting the SPLM or belonging to the SPLA.

Mr. Timothy said the Popular Defence Forces are controlling Kadugli airport.

He added that military police forced over 7,000 IDPs who were camping around the UNMIS compound to return to their homes.

They were told that they returned to the camp they would be arrested.

Mr. Timothy said the UNMIS personnel who were arrested were taken to the military headquarters for investigation and nobody knew about their situation.

UNMIS demanded the immediate release of the six national staff illegally arrested by northern forces.
