Eastern Equatoria MPs recommended an amendment to the Transitional Constitution on land ownership in South Sudan.
Speaker Ambrose Emmanuel Ocholimoi said the MPs voted an amendment saying that the all land of South Sudan is owned by the communities and not by the people, Emmanuel Radio reported. He added that the wording people was too vague.
The speaker stresses that the government should have powers to regulate land use taking into account development needs and provisions of services to the people.
Mr. Ocholimoi said the MPs also proposed that state governors should be involved in the appointment of the members for the Council of States.
The draft Constitution says that the Upper House is made up by the 20 members who sat in the National Council of States plus 30 members appointed by the President of South Sudan.
Mr. Ocholimoi added that during the Speakers Forum in Juba some participants said the state assemblies should also have a say regarding the appointment of members for the Council of States.
