Officials from the education sector in South Sudan started yesterday a three-day conference to develop teaching in the new nation.

GoSS education minister Milly Michael told the participants that the conference would focus on the major priorities: formation of teachers, learning space and human capacity.

He said South Sudan needed many more and better teachers.

Mr. Milly said the conference will tackle issues of gender equity in the education system in South Sudan.

He added that there is a big gap between girls and boys attending school still to be bridged.

The minister noted that the new curriculum will be discussed in order to reflect South Sudan’s cultures and identities.

The conference will also find means to expand alternative education systems for people that have been affected by the war.

Mr. Milly added that the participants should study how to train demobilised soldiers in order to become teachers.
