The people of Abyei have already suffered enough and it was high time they were left in peace.

This is the position on Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul, who heads the Episcopal Church of the Sudan.

The prelate told SCR News that the occupation of Abyei by the troops of Khartoum surprised him.

He said Abyei was destroyed too many times and now it was also occupied.

Archbishop Deng said Khartoum planned the occupation of Abyei in advance.

He added that the Churches condemned the occupation.

Archbishop Deng said the church leaders are asking Khartoum to withdraw its troops from Abyei and allow displaced residents to return to their homeland.

Archbishop Deng and Catholic Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro yesterday issued a joint statement condemning the occupation of Abyei by Northern forces.

They demanded the withdrawal of Northern troops, the deployment of international peacekeepers, the return of the Abyei Administrative Authority and the return of IDPs to their homes.
