MŽdecins Sans Frontires or MSF, an international medical humanitarian organization, is calling for more aid groups to come up to the fleeing population in Agok, where over 200 thousand Abyei refugees have sought protection.
Speaking from Agok over the phone, MSF head of mission Rafeal Gorgeu told SCR News that their activities where suspended from Abyei in the aftermath of the invasion and are currently the only humanitarian organisation assisting refugees in Agok town.Agok is situated south of Abyei in Westrern Bahr al Ghazal state of South Sudan. Abyei town was occupied by the north Sudanese army on Saturday which saw thousands of civilians flee from region.
Rapheal said the civilians, many of whom fled on foot, are women and children who are apparently suffering from respiratory infections.
Meanwhile, a local source in Agok said a local school has accommodated more than two thousand displaced people despite the fact that there is very limited space for such a huge number of people.
The source said the majority are still under trees with children, sick people and elderly adding that people with communicable diseases are forced to sleep together with healthy ones.
The humanitarian situation, already critical, was compounded yesterday by heavy rainfall and the cancellation of a planned food distribution due to lack of security.
