The UN Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) is launching today the 2011 Planting Season Mobilization Campaign under the theme “Every Seed Counts.”

Dr. George Okech, who heads the FAO Office in South Sudan, said in a statement that the campaign is aimed at ensuring that people who have a chance to plant don’t merely stay in the gardens for longer, but that they do so in ways that are effective and boost the final harvest.

FAO is also launching the Seeds Fairs to develop the local seed market.

The campaign intends to boost agricultural production and food security while the food prices are shooting up in the international markets.

FAO says conflicts and fuel prices are on the rise hurting the ability of thousands of thousands including returnees.

The Campaign is funded by the European Commission.
