About 100 women from the ten states of South Sudan have discussed the Transitional Constitution of the new republic in a three-day workshop in Juba.

The event, organised by the National Democratic Institute, the International Republican Institute and the Institute of Inclusive Security, aimed at inspiring, informing and connecting women on the fundamental law of the new country.

MPs Miriam Matembe, from Uganda, and Maimuna Mwidau, from Kenya, came to share their experience of the constitutional process in the respective countries.

Ms. Mwidau told SCR News that she was proud that the new Kenyan Constitution was friendly towards women.

She added that she shared with her South Sudanese sisters about the Kenyan constitutional process and women’s participation to own it.

Ms Matembe on her turn said women should play a special role in giving birth to the new nation.

She added that women should go through the Transitional Constitution, see how it affects them and prepare recommendations before the fundamental law becomes permanent.

The women in attendance were from civil society groups, political parties and government offices.

The Transitional Constitution of South Sudan was submitted to the South Sudan Legislative Assembly for debate, and should be passed before July 5.
