South Sudan marked today 28 years when a handful of military who formed the Sudan Peoples’ liberation Army shot their first bullets in Bor, Jonglei State’s capital, against the Sudan Armed Forces in protest for marginalization.

SPLA spokesperson Colonel Phillip Aguer told SCR News that the SPLA makes sure that it contributes to a positive change in the region as it goes through the stage of conflict transformation and rebuilding.

Asked about the current security situation in South Sudan, Mr. Aguer described it as calm with few cases of cattle rustling mainly in Jonglei state by forces loyal to rebel George Athor.

Mr. Aguer added that the situation is calm in Upper Nile although there is a build up of militia at the border with Blue Nile state that it is being monitored.

He added that rebel forces are laying fresh mines in Unity state.

The SPLA will be renamed South Sudan Armed Forces after the Independence.

The SPLA Day official celebration is scheduled to take place in Bor on May 28.
