Almost one month after rebel Gabriel Tanginya surrendered to the SPLA, the latter says he is under house arrest awaiting charges to be brought against him.
Rebel Gabriel Tanginya voluntarily gave up himself to the SPLA forces after un-expected fight in Jonglei State between his forces and the SPLA, that killed more than 100 people in the recent weeks.
Phillip Aguer, SPLA spokesperson, told SCR news that that Gabriel Tanginya is being kept under house arrest awaiting the government’s investigations. In the past he has received weapons from Khartoum, including military vehicles mounted with artilleries.
However, last year South Sudan president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, issued an amnesty for all rebels, Tanginya included. Mr. Aguer said it will depend on the government if Tangiya should still be recognised under that amnesty.
Tanginya is famed for the two military clashes that occurred in Malakal in 2006 and 2009, which killed hundreds and displaced thousands.
He crossed the North-South border and moved into Jonglei state with his forces in February 2011, agreeing to reintegrate into the SPLA and the process of reintegration was proceeding until the fresh attacks occurred in April 2011.
