Eastern Equatoria residents have witnessed a number of vehicles, animals and humans blown off by landmines in areas that were contested by warring parties.
Areas around Aswa Bridge, in Magwi County, Lirya, Idolu, Torit, parts of Kapoeta and Lafon-Lopa counties remain feared and underutilized due to presence of landmines.
State minister of Land and Public Utility Mark Akio acknowledged that there is a wider fear that landmines were heavily planted in many places in the state unknown to the civilian population.
According to United Nations, there are nearly 6,000 victims of landmines and explosive remnants of war worldwide including Southern Sudan.
