A missionary serving at Mapuordit Mission of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek in Lakes State is calling for prayers so that peace returns to the payam affected by almost three weeks of inter-tribal fighting.

Sr. Philippa Murphy, the principal of St. Comboni Secondary School in Mapuordit, told Good News radio that the situation of residents is “despicable”.

She called on the faithful to pray for a quick resolution of the ongoing Dinka-Atuot and Jur conflict.

Sr. Murphy also urged aid groups to send food to the area to assist the IDPs.

She said the missionaries together with the bishop were at the service of the victims of violence and stayed with them.

She had a call for unity to the peoples of South Sudan as Independence Day approaches.

Sr. Murphy said that there are thousands of displaced people by the clashes, living in despicable conditions at the mission, school and hospital compounds and in the bush.

She added that the Church personnel were reaching out to the displaced with blankets, mosquito nets and plastic sheeting.

Sr. Murphy announced that the schools will reopen tomorrow in Mapuordit.

Local residents said the chief’s son was killed yesterday evening and that two children who had been abducted on Saturday were killed on Sunday.
