A senior church official said South Sudan needs to launch the third phase of evangelization now that peace has come for the Gospel to reach deeper into the life of the communities.

Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Adwot of Khartoum told SCR News that the secretariats of the bishops’ conference in the South should be strengthened to launch what he called the third evangelization of South Sudan to strengthen Christian witness.

He added that the war represented a setback in the process of evangelization in the region and the Gospel has to challenge the lives of the local communities.

Bishop Adwok said the first evangelization ended with the Mahdiya revolution and the second evangelization started with the return of Bishop Roveggio into the Sudan.

He added that the bishops of the Sudan will study how to strengthen the various secretariats in north and south Sudan to prepare the Church for the independence of South Sudan.

The bishops will meet in Juba from April 1 to 7.
