A former adviser to President Salva Kiir Mayardit has declared war against the government of South Sudan.

Major General Abdel-Bagi Ayii was a GoSS presidential adviser until the government reshuffle after the 2010 April elections.

Mr. Ayii gave an interview to Sudanese Media Center, a website linked to Khartoum’s intelligence circles, accusing the SPLM leadership of corruption and giving preferential treatment to some figures.

He also claimed that Muslims in South Sudan were suffering discrimination and cited examples of properties that were taken away from them to be given to foreign investors.

SPLA spokesperson Phillip Aguer Panyang told SCR News over the phone that the government of Khartoum is fuelling these defections.

He said Mr. Ayii has no militias in Aweil where he comes from, but the SAF intelligence is trying to organize Bagara forces to support his rebellion.

Mr. Aguer said the rebels can never outnumber the SPLA confirming that his army is much stronger than what it was during the war.

Mr. Ayii is demanding the formation of an interim government where Muslims are represented.

He joins a growing list of disgruntled militia commanders in South Sudan who have decided to take up arms against the regional government.
