The South Sudan Legislative Assembly intends to establish a revenue authority to bring to books illegal officers involved in collecting taxes from traders.

Bari Wanji, who heads the Assembly’s Economy and Finance Committee, told MPs today that there are many illegal officers who sit behind a table collecting undue taxes.

He described the exercise as shameful adding that the parliament is determined to establish the revenue authority to stop such practices.

Prof. Wanji added that the parliament will insist on a body made up of efficient people with qualifications above secondary certificates with well trained staff.

He noted that the body will be independent with no association to big officials.

Prof. Wanji made these comments while tabling the 2011 GoSS Budget in its second reading.
