As unrest continues in cities across the Middle East and North Africa following uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, the government of South Sudan pledged good governance to prevent such incidents in its territory.

GoSS vice president Riek Machar Teny told a gathering of academics yesterday that his government will work to avoid the wave of popular anger that is sweeping across the Arab world against autocratic leaders.

He pledged even economic development to avoid marginalization and inequality in South Sudan.

The South Sudan government has been accused of corruption and poor governance.

Dr. Machar pledged that the state of affairs will improve after independence and South Sudan will not be on top of the most corrupted states.

On January 30, student protesters took to the streets of Khartoum demanding the removal of president Omar al-Bashir and decrying economic hardships and political oppression.

There are no indications of similar protests in South Sudan as citizens are still giving the leaders a period of grace to prove themselves after independence.
