Farmers in Central Equatoria State are tasked to feed a population of over one million in collaboration with the authorities and donors, an official said.

Central Equatoria agriculture minister Michael Roberto Kenyi told SCR News that over one million residents in the state need to be fed by farmers, with government and international support.

Mr. Kenyi said his government was working to identify the skills and knowledge farmers have in order to boost them.

The minister added that it was important to understand the farmers to be able to plan well.

Mr. Roberto said there is need to move from subsistent to commercialized farming in order to ensure food security in South Sudan and in Central Equatoria in particular.

The minister made these statements this morning at Juba during the inauguration of the first ever farmers conference aiming at organizing the agriculturalists in the state through the establishment of a farmers’ union.

The two-day event is done under the theme “Let the farmers’ voices be heard” and it was funded by Farm-USAID.
