Nimule-Juba road tarmacking starts today with a ceremony at Aswa Bridge and the new pavement should finished within one year.

The works in the 192 kilometer-long highway are funded by USAID and cost some 225 million US Dollars.

Juba-Nimule road is southern Sudan’s most vital supply highway, linking Juba with Uganda.

It is also best route to the Port of Mombasa in Kenya.

It will be the first major paved road to be constructed in southern Sudan since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005.

USAID has also funded 260 kilometres of all-weather gravel roads in Western Equatoria state, which will be completed in April 2011.

The United States is the largest donor to Sudan, contributing nearly10 billion dollars in assistance to Sudan and eastern Chad since 2005.
