The US administration said it will recognize South Sudan as an independent state in July following yesterday’s announcement of the referendum’s final results.

President Barack Obama congratulated the people of south Sudan for the referendum results and said the United States would recognize it as an autonomous country in July.

Mr. Obama said the referendum on self-determination was successful and inspiring.

Yesterday the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission announced the final results of the vote.

Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil said the referendum was fair, accurate, positive and successful and there were no objections to the exercise.

In a related development, the U.S. State Department said yesterday it started the process to remove Sudan from the U.S. state sponsors of terrorism list.
