A Lakes State official castigated teachers who have not turned up for the one-month training, threatening to withhold their February salaries.
Abel Kook Thong, in charge of education in Rumbek East County, told teachers at the start of the Save-the-Children-sponsored training that he was going to seek permission from the Education Ministry to withhold the salaries of colleagues who failed to report for the training.He said the workshop is meant to equip teachers with skills, adding that the absentees are refusing to participate in the fight against ignorance in the community.
Mr. Kook added that teachers will play an important role in bringing development of the new nation.
Save the Children official Enock Mabili said his organization has a five-year plan to support education in Lakes State, including the construction of classrooms and rehabilitation of boreholes.
He added that his NGO will distribute 8,000 textbooks to various schools in the state.
Forty five teachers reported for the training out of the expected 60. The teachers are from Rumbek East and Rumbek Central Counties, Lakes State.
