The SPLA called on the UN Mission in Sudan to intervene in the Abyei border region after satellite images showed a build-up of northern troops in the region.

Colonel Phillip Aguer Panyang told SCR news that the SPLA was concerned with movements of Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) troops and Popular Defence Force militias in the Abyei border area.

He accused northern forces were ambushing returnees coming south.

Mr. Aguer added that the SPLA is not allowed to intervene in the borders of Abyei and called call upon the UN peace mission to monitor the situation and find out what SAF is up to.

Asked if the SPLA will protect the Dinka Ngok in case of further clashes, Mr. Aguer said the CPA says the Abyei police and Joint Integrated Units are tasked to protect the people of Abyei.

The satellite project co-funded by American activist actor George Clooney and Google reported movements of SAF troops with light armour and artillery pieces on Thursday along the Abyei border area between North and South Sudan.
