Southerners studying in the neighbouring countries headed for the border towns of Kaya, Kajokeji and Nimule to register and vote.

Wani Steven is from Eastern Equatoria and studies in Kampala. He told Emmanuel Radio that the students decided to register and vote in South Sudan’s border towns to secure their own ballots.

Oboma Peter is from Central Equatoria state and studies at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. He said registering and voting in Sudan was more patriotic and he decided to travel to Nimule in order to exercise his right.

Meanwhile, Teody Achilo Diego Lotto, who works in the Nairobi offices of the Catholic Diocese of Torit travelled to vote in Torit.

Ms Teody said voting at polling centres abroad would make her feel bad. She added that she felt light-hearted after she cast her vote at St. Theresa’s polling centre.

Mary William Juwa, a referendum official in Eastern Equatoria, said polling centres in Nimule t registered a high number of voters due to the influx of South Sudanese students.
