The Commissioner of South Tonj County offered his car to transport the old and the sick to the polling centres.
Voting started in Tonj with long lines and the town has been in a festive mood ever since people started to cast their votes, Don Bosco FM reported.Elderly, physically challenged, breast feeding mums and pregnant women were given immediate access to the front of the line.
Commissioner Akec Tong Aleu even put his vehicle at the service of those who could not reach polling centres on their own.
Charles Taban, a Salesian Brother, tried to be the first voter in his polling centre inTonj. However, he said he was beaten by others who were queuing when he arrived, including an old man who came to vote at 2 AM.
Brother Taban said he made deal with his students at the Don Bosco Bongo School that he would not to cut his hair and beard until South Sudan voted for independence.
He said he did not have to wait for the result to get a shave and a haircut because he knew what the people would choose.
Brother Taban cut off all his hair while Tonj keeps on celebrating the historic moment.
