The UN asked for an independent review of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme in South Sudan.

The reintegration of former combatants in South Sudan is facing many challenges and not all former combatants that participated in the DDR programme were reintegrated into civil society.

The UNMIS spokesman said in a statement that the UN was concerned that the total number of former combatants and women associated with the armed forces that were reintegrated have been low comparing to the total number of DDR participants who were demobilized and received their reinsertion packages.

The document added that the UN commissioned an independent review and an internal UNDP audit on the reintegration component to find out what is happening.

UNMIS says that the DDR programme is operating in a region that is recovering from a long civil war and it has a very significant impact on the results of reintegration.

The document concludes that the UN owes it to the people of South Sudan and donors to make the DDR programme as successful as possible despite all of the difficulties.
