The SPLM is asking the NCP to avail answers on how the billions owed by the country were spent before negotiations on debt payments take place.

Dr. Anne Itto, SPLM Deputy Secretary General for the Southern Sector, said her party wants the NCP to explain how they borrowed and used the money.

Dr. Itto added that the people of south Sudan wanted to know if some of it was used for the development of the region.

She asserted that the NCP did not to respond to SPLM’s request yet.

Dr. Itto added that the Sudan cannot be relieved of its debt because it has not met requirements to get a debt relief because the government is not in good terms with the creditor countries and did not stop the Darfur conflict.

The NCP ad SPLM are still negotiating post-referendum arrangements, including the payment of the external debt that totals to almost 40 billion US dollars.
