The Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau (SSRB) is training more than 170 civil society and community based organizations to carry out civic education ahead of the vote for self-determination.

The referendum exercise for the people of southern Sudan is 22 days away and voters need to learn how to exercise their right in a valid and proper manner, Bakhita Radio reported.

Mary Justo Tombe is the SSRB public outreach officer. She told journalists this morning in Juba that 177 organizations were receiving training to offer civic education to voters.

Ms. Justo explained that her office advised the civil society organizations to remain neutral while teaching people the essentials about voting.

Ms. Justo said people with disabilities, elderly and women would have priority at the referendum centres.

The 177 groups called guarantees received 2.5 million USD to facilitate their polling education activities.

The money is being managed by UNDP, SSRC and IOM among other organisms.
