Activists gathered on Friday at Freedom Square in Torit to join the rest of the world in commemorating Human Rights Day in remembrance of rights defenders.
Ms. Shilla Kim, an UNMIS officer in charge of Human rights at Eastern Equatoria state said that the focus of the celebration gave recognition to those who defended human rights within the community, Emmanuel Radio reported.Ms. Kim added that those could be individual activists, government institutions, civil servants, and other people who acted in their daily lives to ensure fellow human beings were not discriminated against.
The UNMIS officer said that everyone could be a champion of human rights and defend against discrimination whether they were children, women and men, young and old.
Ms Kim expressed gratitude to celebrate Human rights Day in Eastern Equatoria state under the theme “Speaker up, stop discrimination”.
She urged the support of all the citizens to make a difference by inspiring others to take up the challenge in the spirit of individual rights and justice in Southern Sudan.
