The government of the United States is interested in a free, fair and transparent referendum, the US consul General in Juba said.

Barrie Walkley told journalists today that the US government concern was a timely referendum whose results would be widely accepted internationally.

Mr. Walkley added that he visited many referendum centres across south Sudan and was impressed by the order and patience displayed by registrants.

Mr. Walkley asserted that his government was doing every thing possible to avoid another war in Sudan after the referendum.

The US diplomat added that an amicable divorce was underway and both North and south Sudan should end up happy in a win-win situation.

Mr. Walkley added that the US administration financed some organizations working on the referendum, paid for the printing of registration materials and donated a small plane to the South Sudan Referendum Bureau for access places with poor roads.
