The speaker of Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly said he was disappointed with the low turn up of voters for registration.
About two million voters have so far registered to take part in the January 9 referendum for self-determination of southern Sudan.Speaker James Wani Igga told journalists during a press conference in Torit that the number of registered voters does not reach even half of those who registered in the April election, Emmanuel Radio reported.
The Speaker said he expected at least four million people to register in order to vote in the referendum.
Speaker Igga urged the population to turn up for registration in large numbers and to vote during the polling days that start on January 9.
He stresses that the voters’ turn up was very important saying it would not be easy to achieve the sixty per cent threshold to make the exercise legitimate and binding.
Speaker Igga arrived on Saturday in Eastern Equatoria state to addressed both state and Southern Sudan MPs at the state parliament.
Yesterday he took part in a public rally at Freedom Square in Torit.
Eastern Equatoria was the eighth state Speaker Igga visited during his registration mobilization tour across Southern Sudan.
