An Indian company intends to make green charcoal from biomass in South Sudan in a bid to preserve the environment by controlling deforestation.

The Kogi Kagwada Agro Project, which has already obtained some 50 thousand acres of land along Juba-Yei road, will use the biomass cleared off from the soil in preparation for cultivation.

Project managing director Shashank Sabnis told SCR News over the phone that the green coal is used in a smokeless special stove.

Mr. Sabnis added that the biomass will be compressed into briquettes which will replace charcoal or other fuel in cooking.

The company will also grow vegetables, maize, bananas, beans, cassava.

Mr. Sabnis asserted that the food production would reduce imports from East Africa.
