The man who attempted against the life of Khartoum’s cardinal was freed on mental illness grounds.

Hamdan Mohamed Abdurrahman attempted to kill Archbishop Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako of Khartoum during an open-air mass on October 10, SCR news correspondent reported.

Mr. Mohamed was stopped by the archbishop’s master of ceremonies while coming towards the altar with a long knife and handed over to the police.

It has immerged now that after more than a month in jail, Mr. Mohamed was freed because the police said he was not mentally accountable.

It is not clear whether the man was seen by doctors to declare he did not qualify to stand trial on the grounds of mental illness or if he needs psychiatric treatment.
