Church personnel have a key role in the process of preparation for the referendum registration hand in hand with other civil society groups.

Taban Silvio is policy and advocacy officer for Sudanese Network for Democratic Elections (SuNDE). He told SCR News that the churches have a big role to play in the preparation for the referendum registration through voters’ education in partnership with other civil society groups.

Mr. Taban urged citizens to register in order to be able to choose either union or separation in the upcoming referendum on self-determination for Southern Sudan.

Mr. Taban was speaking at a workshop on the referendum organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba for its personnel.

Some 40 church officials, including priests, religious and lay people, took part in the event that will be repeated next Tuesday.

Participants suggested that church personnel could be used during the registration exercise to identify voters, together with chiefs and teachers.
