GoSS ministry of Health is seeking to raise one point five million US dollars to help control the kala-azar fever outbreak in Jonglei, Upper Nile, Lakes and Eastern Equatoria states.

Lul Riek, Director General of Preventive Medical and Health Promotion in the ministry of health, told the press yesterday in Juba that the amount would cater for human resources, and purchase drugs and supplies for the next six months.

Dr. Lul appealed to partners to assist with syringes, food, mosquito nets and boats to bring patients to health centres.

Undersecretary in the ministry of Health, Olivia Lomoru, said this year there was a dramatic increase in the kala-azar cases with more than seven thousand infections and three hundred and three deaths.

Dr. Lomoru said the kala-azar outbreak was a big concern due to its deadly nature and the ministry was making efforts to contain and address the epidemic.

She added that most of the affected by kala-azar were children who were already malnourished.
