A civil society group appealed to the governments of Southern Sudan and National Unity to strengthen security in order to prevent any eruption of violence during the referenda campaigns.

The executive secretary for Southern Sudan Civil Society Referendum Taskforce, Isaac Kunguru Kenyi, told the press yesterday in Juba that his organization was concerned that security might deteriorate during the referendum process.

Mr. Kunguru added that the taskforce was concerned with the build-up of troops and transfer of weapons in border areas.

He appealed to the NCP and the SPLM to refrain from inflammatory statements during the referenda campaigns, adding that they should also avoid any form of violence including by proxy.

Mr. Kenyi urged the government of south Sudan to monitor flows of illegal arms to avoid inter-tribal conflicts ahead of the referendum.

He called upon both governments to guarantee the security of southerners in the north and vice-versa.

Mr. Kenyi appalled for calm during the referenda process.

He urged GoSS to train and equip the Southern Sudan Police Service to provide security before, during, and after the referendum.

The taskforce urged GoSS to provide adequate security for voters, monitors, and the votes.
