Citizens from Abyei living in Wau marched today through the Western Bahr el Ghazal capital demanding their referendum to be held on time and then borders marked ahead of the vote.
More than two thousand people took part in the peaceful march, Don Bosco Radio correspondent reported.The marchers demanded that the referendum on Abyei was held on January 9, 2011, in a peaceful environment after the borders were demarked.
They also urged the international community to intervene in order to have the consultation on time.
The march started at Wau market and the participants went to UNMIS compound to present a letter with their demands.
The marchers were chanting that there was no South Sudan without Abyei and no Abyei without South Sudan.
They also were saying that Abyei belonged to the nine Ngok Dinka chiefdoms and not to the Misseriya.
The rally concluded at Wau airstrip.
